Assistant/Associate Director of Strategic Communications

Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics, a Division I and Big Ten Conference member, is seeking to hire an Assistant or Associate Director of Strategic Communications. The successful candidate will be responsible for the following:
  • Serving as the primary communications contact for the women's basketball program
  • Mentoring two student assistants in their role as sport communications contacts
  • Producing media guides, news releases, and feature stories
  • Staffing home and away events
  • Supervising student assistants, statistical crews, and other support personnel at events
  • Facilitating social media in line with department goals
  • Other duties as assigned


Typical Education and Experience

This position will be filled at a level 3 or level 4, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Bachelor's Degree or higher plus 4 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. If this role is filled at the level 4, an Associate Director, the successful candidate will serve as one of the leaders of the strategic communications department, supervising multiple staff members and contributing to the execution of the department's overall mission of telling the story of Penn State Athletics while preparing students for a lifetime of impact.

Skills and Qualifications of this position include:
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills are required
  • Knowledge of NCAA rules and compliance is required
  • Considerable initiative, creativity, and independence
  • Experience supervising staff members and/or leadership experience within a communications department, preferably in a higher education and/or an athletically related environment is preferred
  • Proficiency in InDesign, Photoshop, website content management systems, social media platforms, and Statcrew/NCAA Live Stats is preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, public relations or a related field plus work-related experience in communications or public relations is preferred
