Assistant Athletic Director for Clinical and Performance Psychology

The fully embedded Assistant Athletic Director for Clinical and Performance Psychology position located within ICA will have direct administrative oversight of our clinical psychology and mental performance units. The Assistant Athletic Director is a vital member of the multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals within Penn State ICA. While serving on the Sport Performance Leadership Team (SPLT), this position will lead and manage not only the units in which it directly supervises, but also develop and implement a holistic plan to student-athlete mental wellness and performance while working in collaboration with other key members of the SPLT.

The position will perform team and individual sports performance consultation as well as integrated psychological services to student-athletes including, but not limited to counseling, diagnostic assessment, crisis intervention and therapeutic treatment for Penn State's diverse student-athlete population. While providing consultation for coaches, administration, and key staffers (e.g., athletic trainers), the position will develop and cultivate outreach programming and educational presentations on sport-psychology, emphasizing evidence-based practices for overall student-athlete health and wellbeing.

Responsibilities and Duties:

Provides leadership and administrative oversight of mental wellness services and performance psychology.
Provides consultation to athletics leadership and coaches regarding mental health and high performance of student-athletes.
Serve as the athletics representative for mental health and performance to external-facing stakeholders.
Work as part of an integrated treatment team, collaborating with athletic training, team physicians, sports dieticians, etc. as appropriate.
Provides clinical and performance services to clients - individual, group/workshop, and online formats with an emphasis on treatment to student-athletes.
Conducts and manages mental health assessments/screenings and makes recommendations for treatment modality.
Generates/implements treatment plans from evidence-based approaches.
Assists with crisis intervention and emergency services on-site and through on-call system.
Collaborate with treatment providers and staff members in ICA.
Engages in consultation relative to internal and external psychological needs.
Documents, reports, and maintains confidential records and information in compliance with all applicable laws and professional ethical standards.
Interest in engaging in the typical work of a university counseling center, including short-term counseling, group counseling, crisis work, outreach, consultation, and training.
Takes leadership of program, policy and procedure development, implementation, and evaluation.
May provide applied sport psychology services related to athletic performance improvement of student-athletes including services focused on individual mental skills training, team building, communication, leadership, and injury rehabilitation.

Proficiency in addressing all aspects of students intersecting identities within the context of psychotherapy.
Evidence of outstanding skills in clinical assessment, psychotherapy, crisis management, and psychoeducation.
Considerable knowledge and experience in consulting/crisis intervention, workshop presentation and training/supervision of interns and/or hourly staff.
Clinically supervises doctoral psychology interns and may clinically supervise unlicensed mental health professionals.

Educational/Certification Requirements:

Doctoral degree in Counseling or Clinical Psychology from an APA accredited program with state of Pennsylvania licensure as a Psychologist and Health Services Provider in Psychology within 12 months of employment.
Licensure: Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Licensed Professional Counselor, or Licensed Clinical Social Worker
Seven to ten years of experience (can include internship) providing mental health counseling and performance enhancement services to athletes.
A minimum of five years in a university or college setting.

Preferred Qualifications:

Applied Association of Sport Psychology - Certified Mental Performance Consultant.
Experience with specialty areas such as substance misuse and disordered eating.
Experience working in competitive athletic environments.

This position requires the following clearances: PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance Form, and Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check. This position also requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver's license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.
