Associate Director of Strategic Communications

Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics, a Division I and Big Ten Conference member, is seeking an Associate Director of Strategic Communications to serve in a leadership position of in the Strategic Communications department.

This role is responsible for supervising multiple staff members and contributing to the execution of the department's overall mission of telling the story of Penn State Athletics while preparing students for a lifetime of impact. The successful candidate will also serve as the primary communications contact for the nationally-ranked Penn State women's soccer and women's lacrosse programs, and will mentor student assistants in their role as contacts for the men's and women's swimming & diving programs. This position also has responsibility for producing media guides, news releases and feature stories; staffing home and away events; supervising student assistants at events, as well as statistical crews and other event support personnel; facilitating social media in line with department goals; other duties as assigned.

Qualified candidates will possess the following:
  • Supervision or leadership experience, preferably in a higher education and/or an athletic-related environment
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • High level of initiative, creativity and independence
  • Proficiency in InDesign, Photoshop, website content management systems, social media platforms and Statcrew/NCAA Live Stats is preferred
  • Knowledge of NCAA rules and compliance preferred
  • Experience in communications or public relations preferred


Typically requires a Bachelors Degree or higher plus 6 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Degree in journalism, public relations or a related field plus work-related experience in communications or public relations preferred.

This position requires the following clearances in addition to applicable background checks: PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance Form, and Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check.
