Assistant Athletic Director for Creative Services & Brand Management

Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics is seeking a dynamic leader to manage the areas of Creative Services and Brand Management. This oversight includes, but is not limited to graphic design, photography, website development and implementation, branding of facilities, uniform branding and approval of marks, and publications. Successful candidate will oversee the day-to-day business and operations of GoPSUsports.com, its e-commerce areas, all mobile applications as well as oversee the overall direction of social media for the department. This position also includes staff management and budgetary oversight.

Brand Management duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Overseeing proper execution of the brand standards for Intercollegiate Athletics, a brand of national recognition and stature, and ensuring staff compliance as well as external partner compliance with said guidelines.
  • Oversee the development of the department's templates for letterhead, business cards, zoom backgrounds, email signatures, etc.
  • Approving uniform designs throughout the production process and prior to manufacture.
  • Oversee the development of new marks associated with Athletics.
  • Review and provide final approval for various projects produced both within and outside of Athletics, including but not limited to all Athletics marketing collateral (posters, T-shirts, etc.) and sponsorship materials (including ads and giveaways).
  • Provide strategic direction to the Athletic Department, teams and support units on branding for projects that include major facility enhancements and branding in team areas.


Oversee the management of GoPSUsports.com, the Official Athletic Site of the Penn State Nittany Lions, which serves 31 teams, numerous support units and welcomes millions of users each year. This includes, but is not limited to:
  • Overseeing the design and functionality of the website, which includes two e-commerce outlets including the Official Online Store, shop.gopsusports.com, and online auction.
  • Administer the only portion of Intercollegiate Athletics that is "open" 24 hours a day/365 days a year, GoPSUsports.com, which either serves as the host or the direct portal to online ticketing and merchandise sales, game-worn gear sales, and online donations for the Nittany Lion Club.
  • Assist in projecting revenue for the online store.


Administer the areas of graphic design, photography, social media and publications to provide services and implement consistency in the department's visual identity and voice across all platforms. Develop a system of approvals through which teams and support units within Athletics can make requests to Creative Services for needs including, but not limited to: graphic design, printed publications, photography and social media support.

Position oversees the scheduling, agreements and invoices for all freelance photographers, both at home events and on the road in various cities across the nation. Must identify qualified freelance photographers in each area, negotiate rates and get the freelance photographers to sign and return all appropriate University paperwork.

Units within Creative Services are also responsible for:
  • Design and publications support of the Penn State football yearbook and game program, game programs for various other sports including basketball, hockey and volleyball, and the Athletics magazine (ROAR). These include digital versions as well as printed versions in some cases.
  • Social media oversight and guidance where needed for teams and support units. Also includes the administration of the main Athletics and football social media channels, with over one and a half million followers. Position includes the oversight of the department's current contract with INFLCR.


Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher (Master's degree preferred) plus five years of related experience.

Skills and Qualifications of this position include:
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills are required
  • Knowledge of NCAA rules and compliance is required
  • Considerable initiative, creativity, and independence
  • Experience supervising staff members and/or leadership experience within a Creative Services and Brand Management department, preferably in a higher education and/or an athletically related environment is preferred
