Assistant Director of Performance Psychology

Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics, a Division I and Big Ten Conference Institution, is seeking an Assistant Director of Performance Psychology. The position will report to the Director of Performance Psychology.

Recognizing the multiple demands, pressures, and developmental needs of 31 Division One programs, the Performance Psychology Department exists in order to educate and mentor coaches and student-athletes on evidence-based best practices in sport and performance psychology, organizational dynamics, culture development, and leadership in order to help prepare our student-athletes for a lifetime of impact. Services include education on mental skills known to influence performance excellence, such as confidence, concentration, energy management, visualization, goal setting, communication, composure, leadership, mental toughness, etc. A majority of this education takes place in team settings, but individual assistance is also available to help student-athletes effectively respond to adversity and success, as well as break through to new heights in performance.

The Assistant Director of Performance Psychology will be responsible for assisting student-athletes in developing mental skills and strategies essential to maximizing sport performance; educating student-athletes and coaches on psychological principles and strategies to achieve optimal performance; providing performance consulting and support to student-athletes, teams, and staffs upon request; conducting initial consultations and assessments for student-athletes with a wide-range of performance, cognitive, behavioral, social, emotional, and developmental growth opportunities.

Required Qualifications and Credentials:
  • Masters' degree from an accredited college or university in the field of Psychology or Kinesiology with a specialized emphasis in sport and/or performance psychology plus 1 or more years of related experience.
  • Current or on track to gaining Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) status from the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP).
  • Significant experience working in applied performance psychology services at the collegiate level or with other elite populations.
  • Resilience training certification.
  • Experience with biofeedback or neurofeedback desirable.

  • Demonstrated ability to connect with and inspire a diverse student-athlete population (e.g., race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, etc.), while helping foster a culture of respect in order to enhance student-athlete experience and maximize potential.
  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills with the ability to initiate, analyze, monitor, evaluate, and advance strategic plans that support student-athletes and the mission of the department.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and conduct high-performance services through empirically supported education.
  • Expertise in cognitive performance training and life skill development for student-athletes and coaches.
  • Broad understanding of physiological, nutritional, motor movement, and training principles that influence performance.
  • Must possess excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills, innovation and creativity, mental agility and adaptability.
  • Expert-level leadership, communication, relationship building, writing, public speaking, and facilitation skills.
  • Ability to recognize students who may be experiencing cognitive, behavioral, emotional, social, physical, or developmental challenges that may negatively impact their performance and well-being and make referrals to appropriate campus resources.
  • An understanding of non-traditional hours and the ability to flexibly work long hours, including early mornings, late nights, weekends, holidays, and extended periods of time without days off.


This position requires the following clearances: PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance Form, and Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check. This position also requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver's license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.
