Director, Brand Academy, PSU Intercollegiate Athletics

The Office of Entrepreneurship and Commercialization (OEC) in the Office of the Senior Vice President for Research, in partnership with Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics (ICA) is seeking an experienced and strategic Director to lead and establish direction for the Penn State's new Brand Academy designed to support student-athletes and others to more successfully manage and monetize their personal brand and support their entrepreneurial interests.

Funded through the Wally Triplett Brand Academy Endowment, at its core, the academy's role is to help student-athletes view themselves as entrepreneurs and to develop an entrepreneurial mindset, which can serve them well in their careers long after they have left college and athletic competition. With new opportunities related to name, image, likeness (NIL), the academy will play a critical role in helping to educate student-athletes on evaluating and navigating NIL opportunities, as well as building entrepreneurial skills.

Roles and Responsibilities: Reporting to the Associate Director of Economic Development and Student Programs in collaboration with the Assistant Athletic Director for Development and Enrichment, this individual is responsible for, but not limited to, recruiting business-minded student-athletes, providing leadership, strategic direction, and oversight of entrepreneurship education programs and events including brand building, social media responsibility, financial literacy, professionalism, media training, interest and values assessment, diversity and inclusion, and building relationships with alumni and industry.

Key responsibilities:
  • Serving as the main point of contact between Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics and Invent Penn State.
  • Actively participating in the recruitment of business-minded student-athletes, including weekend and evening events.
  • Building a nationally recognized student-athlete entrepreneurial program that will attract and maintain top recruits.
  • Assisting in the development and execution of strategy specific to NIL.
  • Identifying and recruiting third parties able to assist with brand building and NIL education.
  • Envisioning and overseeing educational programming, events, and resources that directly equip students with an entrepreneurial mindset and the skills necessary to engage in NIL and other entrepreneurial opportunities.
  • Benchmarking and executing on best practices for continuous improvement related to student-athlete entrepreneurship.
  • Identifying and building collaborative partnerships and relationships across Penn State's entrepreneurial ecosystem and with external university partners to expand the Academy's ability to deliver programs in support of student entrepreneurial activities and economic development.
  • Ensuring all programs, event, and partnerships are in compliance with Pennsylvania NIL law and NCAA, Big Ten Conference, and PSU Athletics NIL rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Coordinating with Invent Penn State Marketing to define and oversee comprehensive marketing strategy for the Academy's programs, events, resources, and entrepreneurial opportunities both inside and outside the classroom.
  • Defining, overseeing the collecting metrics to assess and report on the Academy's impact and recommend changes to programs, policies, and practices accordingly.
  • Hiring, supervising, evaluating, and developing staff.
  • Manage and provide complete oversight for administrative, operational, financial, and programmatic components of the Academy.


Education and Experience: This position typically requires a Master's degree or higher and 5+ years of related experience (or an equivalent combination of education and experience) in sports business and brand development, negotiation, contracts, financial literacy, and media.
  • Five plus years of experience in sports business and brand development, negotiation, contracts, financial literacy, and media.
  • Experience working with student/student-athletes in educational settings.
  • Significant working knowledge of the rules and regulations set forth by the NCAA and Big Ten.
  • Demonstrated understanding of traditional and non-traditional business models, including NIL and franchising.
  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate, build, and maintain strong working relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds and perspectives and in promoting and building diverse, equitable, and inclusive teams and programs.
  • Ability to identify key tasks in support of overall goals, develop actionable plans, and execute on those plans and assess impact of programs with limited supervision.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and budget management experience.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.


This position is a fully in-person position located in State College, PA.
