Director for Student-Athlete Welfare & Development

Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics, a Division I and Big Ten Conference member, is seeking a Director for Student-Athlete Welfare and Development. This position works with 800+ Penn State student-athletes to provide services, information and resources that enable them to successfully transition into the University, their sport, the community, and to ultimately transition out of Penn State into the workforce. The Director of Student-Athlete Welfare and Development will deliver and manage programming and initiatives focused on key areas including career development, community service, leadership development, platform creation and development, among other key skills pertaining to the holistic growth of student-athletes. The incumbent will provide individual and team developmental opportunities for student-athletes including but not limited to self-exploration, occupational discovery (i.e., entrepreneurship), resume building, post-graduate planning and interview preparation.

Additional responsibilities include:
  • Communicating regularly with coaches, team support staff, compliance staff, and academic advisors
  • Organizing events and workshops
  • Meeting with student-athletes and families during recruiting visits
  • Engaging with alumni and key University partners
  • Responsible for continuing and improving current career, community service, technology, name, image and likeness (NIL), and leadership development programs, workshops, and events.

  • Ability to facilitate, plan, develop, and implement measurable educational programs
  • Ability to effectively communicate with diverse populations and groups through written and oral correspondence
  • Ability to multi-task and work independently
  • Excellent organization and time management skills
  • Sensitivity and experience working with cultural, academic, socioeconomic, and ethnic diversity
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite applications, Adobe, and Canva
  • Social media knowledge and utilization
  • Address subordinates, peers, and students respectfully and professionally
  • Find ways to turn ideas into reality
  • Experiment with new ideas, methodologies, and procedures
  • Use and integration of technology to achieve desired outcomes of programs


Education and Other:
  • Typically requires a Bachelor's Degree or higher plus 4 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Previous student-athlete development and/or individual career advising experience required
  • A Master's degree is preferred
  • Former student-athlete experience desired
  • Basic knowledge of NCAA and Big Ten Conference eligibility rules is desired


Candidates must be willing to work weekend and evening hours, as needed.
